About Black Square Editions

Small press, big heart.

Black Square Editions is a nonprofit printing press, started by John Yau in 1999 with the intention of publishing translations of little known books by well-known poets and fiction writers, as well as the work of emerging and less-established authors.

John started the press for the same reason most small presses start: he wanted to see other types of authors being published.

Our authors now include Matvei Yankelevich, Rosalyn Drexler, Brian Evenson, Andrew Joron, Eugene Lim, Gary Lutz, Michael Leong, Albert Mobilio and Barry Schwabsky.

We have also published translations of Pierre Reverdy’s first book of prose poems and a little-known novella, as well as books by Marcel Cohen, Jacques Dupin, Serge Fauchereau, Jean Fremon, Ludwig Hohl and Pascalle Monnier.

Our translators include John Ashbery, Brian Evenson, Jennifer Hayashida, Ron Padgett, Donna Stonecipher and Michael Tweed.

We have published novels, novellas, short stories, prose poems, poetry and essays. We have yet to decide whether we are eclectic but not necessarily open-minded, or open-minded but not necessarily eclectic.

You’ll have to read a few of our books and let us know.

Black Square Editions is an imprint of Off the Park Press, Inc., a 501(c)(3) literary arts organization based in New York.
